Right now, in whatever room you're sitting in, there are dozens of engineering marvels going completely unnoticed. A zipper. A ballpoint pen. A refrigerator hum. We walk past extraordinary things every single day without blinking — and that, my friends, is a wonderful problem to fix.
Here at Cogwheel Workshops, we believe one of the most powerful things we can do for a curious young mind is help them see what was always there. Because once a child starts asking "but how does this work?" about the objects in their everyday life, the world transforms into the world's most spectacular museum — and admission is free.
The Bicycle: A Rolling Classroom
Take the humble bicycle. At first glance? Two wheels and some handlebars. But pull back the curtain and you'll find a masterclass in mechanical engineering. Gears multiply force so a small push of the pedal becomes real speed. Spokes distribute weight around the rim to keep the wheel strong without making it heavy. Brakes convert kinetic energy into heat through friction. Every component solves a problem someone once sat down and thought hard about.
Ask a child to draw a bicycle from memory and they'll almost certainly get it wrong — the chain, the sprocket position, the way the frame triangulates for strength. That's not a failure; that's an invitation. It means there's still something wonderful left to discover.
The Power of "Huh, I Never Thought About That"
The moment of noticing — really noticing — is one of the most important experiences in STEM education. It's the click of a gear engaging. It's what separates a passive observer from an active thinker.
Children aged 7–11 are at a beautiful stage where their world is expanding rapidly but still feels manageable. A straw, a spinning top, a can opener, the way ice floats rather than sinks — these aren't boring domestic objects. They're phenomena. And when we frame them that way, we invite children into the same mindset that drives engineers, scientists, and inventors.
Try this with a child: hold up an ordinary object — a pencil, a pair of scissors, a light switch — and simply ask, "How do you think this works?" Don't rush to the answer. Let them hypothesize, poke around, make guesses. Then explore together. The conversation that follows is pure STEM thinking in action.
Everywhere Is a Workshop
One of the great myths of STEM education is that it only happens in labs and classrooms, with expensive equipment and white coats. But the best tinkerers have always known: the kitchen, the garden, the back seat of a car — everywhere is a workshop if you're paying attention.
The next time your child asks "why does the toast pop up?" or "how does the remote know which TV to change?", resist the urge to reach for a quick answer. Pause. Wonder alongside them. Say, "That's a brilliant question — what do you think?"
That pause, that invitation to wonder, is where STEM really begins.
